Nihilsentimentalgia is Sofia Silva’s web-based platform about contemporary photography and visual discourses. The project started in 2008, when Sofia was concluding her Photography undergrad and felt the need to start an online database for theoretical and visual resources. During the following years it evolved into a place where she writes about images and issues that interest her
Nihilsentimentalgia is written in English because its readers are mostly non-Portuguese speaking. It was a compromise done a long time ago. This website has recently started a section of texts written in Sofia’s mother language, but it’s still on trial mode.
Sofia is a lecturer in several photographic disciplines and Nihilsentimentalgia now works as the fundamental resource of information for her students. Given her professional practice, education is a recurrent theme and her students are frequently mentioned.
In 2018, Sofia finished a PHD on ‘Authenticity’, so don’t be surprised if posts on authenticity-related issues happen to come your way. Phototherapy is also a recurrent theme, for she practices art therapy as survival mode.
She is also founder and editor @ Propeller, a magazine dedicated to photographic expression
