As is becoming ever more often, another student’s work sets ground @ Nihilsentimentalgia. Carlos was my student for the past year and the selection of work featured here, about his family, caught my attention. These images are part of a larger project about Carlos’ grandmother, Engrácia, with 84 years old, who lives with her husband, Alexandre, 81, and Carlos’ uncle Paulo, 54, who struggles with schizophrenia and recently had a stroke.
Carlos chose to venture into an analogue approach, taking advantage of the particularities of the color negative film, which in some sense mimic the singularities of this domestic space. There’s a sense of vitality potentiated by the colors that is balanced by the continuous tone of the motives and the composition. However, what I think constitute the punctum of the project lies behind the author’s intentions, in this happy encounter between the different windows (displays), that mediate the relation between the surface of the medium and the author’s gaze.
